Abdul El-Sayed is a physician, public health leader, and former health commissioner who has dedicated his career to improving healthcare, expanding opportunity, and strengthening communities across Michigan.
Raised in Michigan as the son of immigrants, Dr. El-Sayed earned degrees in biology and public health before receiving his medical degree. He later served as Executive Director of the Detroit Health Department, where he worked to expand access to healthcare, improve maternal and child health, address public health disparities, and strengthen community-based health initiatives. His career has focused on solving problems that directly affect working families and ensuring that every Michigander has the opportunity to live a healthy, secure life.
His campaign for the U.S. Senate is centered on building an economy that works for everyone by lowering costs, strengthening healthcare, protecting Social Security and Medicare, supporting Michigan manufacturing, and defending fundamental freedoms. El-Sayed has emphasized making healthcare more affordable, reducing prescription drug costs, investing in public education, protecting reproductive freedom, addressing the housing affordability crisis, and creating good-paying jobs through innovation and clean energy manufacturing.
Throughout the campaign, he has built a broad grassroots organization powered by volunteers and small-dollar supporters across Michigan. His message focuses on bringing people together around the everyday issues that matter most to families—affordability, economic security, healthcare, and opportunity—while working to ensure every community has a voice in shaping Michigan’s future.
